What should my dean's letter include?

A dean's letter is required for medical students and hands-on experiences. The letter should confirm the visitor's status as a current medical student and authorize them to participate in the clinical experience.

Your dean's letter need to have the following information:
  • Student's full name
  • School's full name
  • Specify a degree program
  • What year the student is in school
  • Whether or not they will receive credit for the rotation
  • That the student is in good standing
  • That the school authorizes and recommends the student to attend: the specific program
  • During the specific dates at the specific location
  • With the specific preceptor
  • That the school expects the student back when the experience is complete to complete their degree program
The letter must also:
  • Be on school letterhead
  • Contain the dean's signature
  • Contain the school stamp
